Although it is not big, there are plenty of sights to see and do on Ikaria. A number of these are also part of the Dutch Icarian Longevity programs. We have not yet discovered everything on the island, so the sights below form a short selection.

Armenistis
This town is located on the north side of the island and is the most popular tourist destination of Ikaria. Most tourists come here because this is where the best facilities are. The picturesque village is very cozy with many nice tavernas and cafeterias. The most beautiful beaches on the island are also within walking distance, just outside the village in an easterly direction.

Osia Theoktisti Monastery.
In the middle of a pine forest, on the northern half of Ikaria, near Pigi, lies the uninhabited Osia Theoktisti Monastery. The monastery has two churches. The first is Agios Theoskepasti Church. It dates from around 1600 and has a rich collection of frescoes. A little further away there is a special church belonging to the monastery. This is built under a huge boulder, which also forms the roof of the church. Inside are some skulls of old monks.
At the entrance of the church there is a cafe where an old lady makes delicious coffee and the tastiest loukoumades on the island.

Hot spring “Spilaio”
This municipal source can be found in the center of Therma, at the end of the beach. The water from this cave (‘spilaio’ means ‘cave’) is therapeutic and radioactive and is known for its healing and soothing effect on many ailments. Think of rheumatism, breathing problems and skin conditions. In addition, it has a soothing effect on body and mind.

Hiking
You can hike endlessly on Ikaria! And although the island is quite mountainous, most routes are not overly difficult. A great way to relax through exertion. The stunning nature does the rest for you to undergo unforgettable experiences. For a nice overview of the most beautiful walks, look here.
